Abstract

The Biomechanics, Biomaterials, and Multimodal Tissue Imaging (B2MTI) Core is an indispensable catalyst for efficiency and innovation in the University of Rochester Resource-based Center for Bone, Muscle and Orthopaedic Research (ROCSTARR). Over the past 9 years, the B2MTI Core utilized state-of-the-art equipment to provide scientific services, including biomechanical testing, biomaterials synthesis, fabrication and characterization, as well as preclinical and medical imaging in models of musculoskeletal pathologies and repair. In this renewal application, we will continue to provide ROCSTARR investigators with the scientific expertise and services that meet the standards of efficiency, scientific rigor, and reproducibility. In addition, we will foster the development of innovative technologies by the ROCSTARR Investigators to catalyze funding and cultivate collaborative research programs that address the challenges that impact musculoskeletal health. Our Aims include: 1) providing services and facilitating innovations in biomechanical testing at multiple scales in models of orthopaedic trauma and disease, as well as supporting clinically relevant cadaveric studies of surgical implants and repair procedures; 2) supporting innovations in biomaterials for drug and cell delivery and expanding the scope of biomaterials integration into novel microphysiological models of musculoskeletal tissues and systems (e.g., tissue chips); 3) supporting multimodal preclinical imaging including micro-CT, multispectral (fluorescence and bioluminescence), near infrared, and ultrasound imaging, and exploring innovations in other imaging modalities including Raman Spectroscopy and Diffuse Correlation Tomography for applications in the assessment of bone quality and fracture repair; 4) integrating expert ROCSTARR faculty as Advisors in specialty Sub-Cores to offer conceptual and technical guidance and expanded access to novel technologies; and 5) interacting with the Core Users Committee to maintain cost-effective access to Core resources and supporting the Admin Core’s Enrichment initiatives including the P30 Pilots and the new Discovery Fund. Over the past 9 years, the B2MTI Core has proven the added value of integrating its services to overcome the inefficiencies of uncoordinated efforts from multiple ROCSTARR laboratories, and has had a measurable impact on the research programs of NIH-funded and New/Early Stage ROCSTARR Investigators. The B2MTI Core will continue to foster collaborative funding and high impact scientific publications that advance musculoskeletal discoveries and innovations from the bench to the bedside.
