Abstract

The overall goal of Brandon Goldson’s supplemental research is to leverage the parent project’s exposure expertise and measures (metals, stress) to address a research gap by examining associations between these exposures, starting prenatally, and early childhood antecedents of mental health risk. The project will also leverage planned urinary metals assays for n~3,000 PRISM ECHO prenatal samples which can be pooled with this supplement through Big Win analysis proposal HHEAR EC0376, and stress measures and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) collected through the ECHO-wide cohort protocol with guidance on harmonization across life stage by PRO Core investigators, to examine the influence of complex metal and/or stress mixtures on transdiagnostic (TD) features linked to anxiety and depressive problems assessed up to ages 3-6 years. The proposal includes collaborations with ECHO HHEAR and PRO Core components. This supplement will support Brandon Goldson to work with the PRISM/ECHO investigator team at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to conduct and interpret analyses focused on both 6-mo and 3-yr outcome data and to gain experience in manuscript preparation. This opportunity will expand his knowledge in the role of metals in neurotoxicity, specifically their potential impact on early psychopathology which remains largely unexplored. He will also gain a greater understanding of the importance of interactions between chemicals and social stressors in relation to health disparities. The goal is to have 2 first-authored manuscripts, with one submitted and published prior to his applications to residency programs following the completion of medical school. This will strengthen his planned applications for research residency programs to further his research training.
