An employee was in a trench box inside of a 30 foot deep trench signaling a backhoe operator who was lowering a pipe into the trench. The employee's left arm was caught between the bucket (6 feet wide and 9 feet deep) and the trench box. The employee suffered contusions and swelling of the employee's left arm was evident. The employee was hospitalized.
