Multiple severe wounds and internal injuries

An employee was unloading a piece of 8-inch-thick, 21-foot-long steel pipe (600 pounds) from the deck level of a curtain side flatbed truck by rolling it off the side to the ground. He had used a 36-inch-long hook with a T handle on the end to position the pipe so it would clear a frame at the rear of the truck. The front end of the pipe rolled off the truck, and the employee (still holding the hook) was pulled off the truck with it. He landed on the asphalt on his hands and knees, and his torso struck the pipe. He suffered bruising to the chest, cracked ribs, a lacerated kidney, and bruising/swelling to his knees. He was hospitalized.
