An employee was changing a manual steel thumb on an excavator. When the thumb was disconnected, he lost his balance and fell from the excavator bucket he had been standing on. The thumb then pinned his left foot and knee, causing injuries to the foot and the knee that resulted in swelling and ligament damage.
